Espec provides preventive and emergency maintenance of electrical services to the City of Darwin, including street lighting, public area lighting, and CCTV. This includes a 24-hour emergency response service to the City of Darwin.

Work is conducted at council facilities within the Darwin region, including council buildings, operations centres, car parks, public parks, reserves and ovals, George Brown Botanic Gardens, childcare, and community centres and swimming pools. Espec abides with the rules and requirements of each individual site.

  • Supply, installation and maintenance of electrical services to council buildings, facilities and other assets
  • Maintenance of existing electrical infrastructure
  • Replacement of defective lighting, including supply and installation of new LED equipment
  • Replacement of underground-fed lights and repair of light heads

 

Work is scheduled depending on urgency and accessibility to individual sites. A traffic management plan is prepared for work being conducted close to public access roads. The contract manager approves both work schedules and traffic management plans, when required, prior to work commencing.

Simpro is used to record and track new equipment and infrastructure so that the City of Darwin can manage asset inventory for the lifespan of the equipment. The user scans the barcode assigned to each fitting and records the information of the asset. New barcodes can also be created and assigned to existing assets.

Espec is a panel contract service provider to Power Water Corporation for planned and urgent maintenance on power distribution networks in the Darwin region. Maintenance work includes underground, overhead and high voltage infrastructure, as well as repair and maintenance of overhead hardware, such as insulators, cross arms, and HV/LV disconnectors.

Four scopes of work are included in this contract:

  • Package substations and switch foundations
  • Ground floor substations
  • First floor substations
  • Cable upgrades

Overview of scope:

  • Survey, trenching and hydro-vac for HV cables
  • Construction of MKII foundations, earthing systems and substation pads
  • Supply and installation of power poles
  • Supply and installation of overhead conductors and aerial earth
  • Supply and installation of HV cables
  • Termination of cables and installation of new HV cables into substations
  • Testing and commissioning
  • Provision of updated as-constructed drawings and handover documentation.

Espec schedules work based on priority (i.e. emergency or routine
maintenance), site requirements and accessibility to site. All personnel
allocated to this contract, including site staff and supervisors, have completed a
Power Water induction, as well as individual site inductions.

The LED replacement program contract consists of replacing the existing lighting system with LED luminaries across the Palmerston region. Nearly 6,500 light bulbs are required to be changed and recycled over the 24-month contract.

  • Replace all the existing pole lights (estimated 6,500 lights)
  • Recycle the existing light bulbs, including recycling/disposal of mercury
  • Provision of traffic management
  • Replacement of poles or poles accessories, as required.

Simpro job management software is used to record the status and history of all lighting assets related to this contract. Simpro assigns a barcode to each fitting which allows the user to easily scan the barcode to retrieve the asset information. New barcodes can also be created and assigned to existing assets.

Espec is responsible for quarterly routine maintenance for the light bulbs for twelve months following installation. Any faulty lights found during inspection or installation are replaced immediately as part of the urgent maintenance response.

 

 

Espec was awarded the 36-month Northern Territory Government contract for the repairs and maintenance of solar PV power systems in July 2019.

The work comprises of inspections, testing, repairs and maintenance of grid connect, stand-alone, hybrid and solar powered area lighting at NT Government schools and other NT Government assets, including transport infrastructure across the Northern Territory.

With the contract involving over 100 sites across the Territory, asset management and record keeping is key. Espec maintain an asset register of equipment on all the sites through a cloud-based job management system. Field staff have access to all information via ipads and our customer portal allows for real time job reporting and status updates. The client can generate custom made reports on any site and get information on specific assets in real time.

Our solar maintenance team includes Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited electricians, certified to design and install solar systems. The team has vast experience in installing solar arrays across Darwin and rural areas, ranging from 6kW domestic installs to 100kW commercial installs with monitoring systems and displays as well as zero export limiters.

We are proud to be able to offer our apprentices training opportunities in renewables through this contract. We currently have four apprentices who are all getting regular opportunities to install and maintain solar PV systems.

Espec provides ongoing electrical maintenance support to Thales on the Armidale Class Patrol Boat In Service Support contract. Under this contract, we carry out planned and reactive maintenance works as well as urgent defect tasks to the vessels that make port in Darwin.

The Defence prime contractor, Thales Australia, identifies planned maintenance activities to be completed during quarterly maintenance periods. We are responsible for identifying hazards, defects, non-conformances, as well as emergency repairs.

Examples of tasks undertaken within the maintenance program include:

  • removing and inspecting masts for integrity
  • inspections and testing for onshore mains power
  • 12-monthly portable appliance testing
  • 12-month electrical system inspections, including control panels, distribution boards, earthing arrangements, junction boxes, sub-circuits, PLCs and IO modules
  • identifying hazards and non-conformances, including reporting remediation works
  • periodical testing and maintenance of inverters and UPS system
  • periodical float charge
  • programming and commissioning of the Marine Link system and sensors.

Espec subcontracts to Broadspectrum for maintenance and emergency repair works to electrical systems and elevators at all Defence bases across the Northern Territory.

We provide quarterly planned maintenance, responsive repairs, and a 24-hour emergency repair response service, with a 30-minute emergency response time for passengers stuck in elevators. Our personnel hold manufacturer-issued competencies for conducting work on the various elevators.

Under this contract, Espec develops a maintenance plan for scheduled periodic maintenance and servicing for each class of elevator on site, including passenger and goods elevators operating both hydraulic and electrical systems. As part of the maintenance program, Espec provides condition reports and recommendations for remediation work required.

General electrical maintenance work under this contract includes inspection, testing and maintenance of solar external lighting, inspection and testing of distribution/switchboards, portable appliance testing, and general repairs to lighting and power distribution systems. This also includes a 24-hour on-call service for emergency works.

Espec maintains a safety, quality and environment management system that meets the client’s requirements. In addition to competencies issued by elevator manufacturers, all site personnel hold a current base pass and have completed site inductions.

Espec provides planned and reactive electrical and data communications maintenance for the three Hilton hotels in Darwin: Hilton Darwin, Double Tree Darwin, and Double Tree Esplanade. This includes provision of a 24-hour emergency service for urgent repairs.

Works include installation, upgrades and maintenance of:

  • distribution and switchboards
  • RCD testing
  • portable appliance testing
  • general lighting and power
  • emergency and exit lighting systems
  • audiovisual systems
  • data communications
  • commercial appliances, including maintaining onsite laundry equipment

To support the Hilton Group in asset management, Espec provides asset inspection records, condition reports and recommendations for remediation work required. Risk mitigation is paramount, with works being conducted in an operational environment around staff, hotel guests and other contractors. Espec works with the hotel staff to ensure works don’t impact on the operations of the hotel, including scheduling testing out of peak times and attending site within identified timeframes.

Since 2011, Espec have carried out maintenance and installation work in all areas of the freight terminal, located at East Arm, Darwin. These works include the maintenance of high-level track-side and loading area HPS lighting.  We operate knuckle booms adjacent to the train lines and truck access roads to access and repair fittings. There is also an overhead HV/LV distribution system that runs through part of the site, which increases access complexities to lights.

We have carried out installation and maintenance in the fuel shed, where the locomotives are re-fueled with diesel and works within the sanding shed. Specific track awareness inductions with spotters are required to perform any works in these areas.

Recent major work included the installation of the electrical and data communication systems for the Camco automated site access and weigh bridge station. This consisted of a dedicated UPS to supply a distribution board which then fed the various external and internal field circuits. The works to be carried out around traffic entry times while working in the main haulage entrance to the terminal. The electrical and communications wiring was installed on galvanized tray which was fixed externally of the gate house and run adjacent, and underneath the weighbridge.

Espec works closely with the freight terminal manager to co-ordinate works around haulage vehicle, train and locomotive schedules. This ensures the safety of our team and that of Genesee and Wyoming.

Lysaght are a steel, aluminium and custom orb manufacturer based in Darwin. Espec carry out a range of electrical maintenance on industrial machinery and electrical control systems on the factory floor. This involves fault finding on the custom metal folding machines, maintaining emergency stop mechanisms, RCD inspections, test and tagging and emergency and exit lighting testing.

Callidus carry out repair, maintenance, and diagnostics of valves, actuators, and instrumentation equipment. Espec provide electrical maintenance on industrial machinery and electrical control systems throughout the Callidus workshop.

Electrical repairs, maintenance and test and tagging on forklifts and access equipment. Call out works to Kmart, Coles and Target stores to repair lifts, forklifts and generators.

General electrical maintenance across Goodstart Early Learning childcare centres, including electrical inspections, electrical inspections, emergency and exit lighting and test and tagging.
